Chan Chan, a very large complex built by the Chimor people, an offshoot of the earlier Moche people was active until about 1500 AD. In a fertile, well-watered area, it was built around 850 AD and lasted until conquered by the Incans.

Our archaeological tour continues at Chan Chan

This was the second of the archaeological areas that we visited. The Chan Chan site is mostly level but the distances are quite extensive and there’s one place along the way where the ledge that must be traversed (both directions) is so narrow that everyone must go single-file (and maybe not look down over the side!). The photos will give some indication of how large these spaces are.

There are many opportunities online to learn more about this area's history. Below are just a couple that I've found helpful:

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Smithsonian Museum

Other archaeology sites accessible from Trujillo include El Brujo and Luna; both are linked under "Trujillo" in the menu bar at the top of the page.
